Curriculum Vita

Research Goals

  • School systems expend an inordinate amount of resources on proprietary educational software systems. There are many open source alternatives that could be implemented for a fraction of the cost. The Internet for example is largely based upon open source software designed initially in educational research institutions.
  • I have already used open source software in an elective class called Far Out Science. The students were very receptive and enjoyed the freedom that the systems provided for learning and experimentation. The students actually learned system programming and helped with system maintenance. Several students are now studying computer technology at major universities.
  • I would like to expand that to include an entire classroom setting comparing it to classroom equipped with "conventional" software.
  • It is my hypothesis that student learning would be improved. In addition, the school system would experience a significant cost saving.
